Deciding where a spare key lives is a small, practical question about trust. Under a mat is not really a decision; it is a shrug. A neighbour holding one is an arrangement, and arrangements need people.

The hiding places are all known

Mats, pots, the ledge above the door and the fake stone are the four places anyone checks first. A key in any of them is findable to the one person you would rather not find it.

A person is better than a place

Handing a key to somebody creates a small obligation in both directions, which is precisely why it works. You are now a little in each other's lives, and the key is only the visible part.

Ask before you need it

The request is much easier made on an ordinary Tuesday than at eleven at night in the rain. Arrange it while it is hypothetical.
